Farside of the Moon / South Pole-Aitken Basin
This project introduces Ice Castle, which is a research facility designed for generating energy from ice and supporting lunar exploration. It is located on the far side of the Moon, specifically in the South Pole Aitken Basin.
Ice Castle is not just one building. Instead, it is a system called Arch.ex.Machina that can move, think, communicate, and change its surroundings. It is designed to work in very harsh conditions.
Unlike traditional structures that only adapt to their environment, Ice Castle actively controls and regulates its own environment on the Moon.
In this project, the word ‘island’ does not mean a land surrounded by water. Instead, it means a controlled system that is separated and has limited contact with the outside. This system allows people to survive, explore, and do research by carefully managing how it interacts with its environment.
The South Pole Aitken Basin is not a good place for people to live. It has very harsh temperature changes, areas that are always in shadow, and it is very isolated with no direct way to communicate with Earth. Because of these reasons, it is hard to use normal settlement plans here. However, NASA’s research and exploration projects show that these same conditions make the basin a good place for observation, exploration, and research on energy, rather than for building settlements (NASA, 2020; NASA, 2022).
Therefore, Ice Castle is not just an idea or a choice, but a necessary response to the harsh conditions of the basin. Instead of imagining a city on the Moon, this project looks at what kinds of buildings and machines are needed to make exploration and research possible in a place with very limited
energy, access, and ability to support life.
